Some Halloween reading and watching for everyone! School age children can enjoy reading Neil Gaiman’s Coraline and following it up with the 2009 stop-motion film. Fair warning, Coraline has an MPAA rating of PG, however, it can be traumatising for the younger set — use your judgement here! Similarly, there’s Roald Dahl’s the Witches. The 1990 film with Angelica Houston was rated PG, but I’m not sure how well this will hold up with the contemporary viewers. The 2020 adaptation with Anne Hathaway is also rated PG. There’s also the new Netflix release, Vampires vs. the Bronx, which is rated PG-13.

For young adults I suggest Alexis Henderson’s The Year of Witching, as well as Franz Xaver Von Schönwerth’s fairy tale graphic novel.

For the more mature readers and viewers, I’ve got Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca. Hitchcock adapted this novel in 1940, and I’ve had reviews that this older film is better than the new Netflix adaptation. The Winters by Lisa Gabriele is also a modern adaptation of du Maurier’s novel.

If foreign language films and shows appeal to you, you may consider Patrick Suskind’s Perfume. There is a 2006 film adaptation and more recently a 2018 tv show on Netflix.

Lastly, we’ve got Lily Collins in the new Netflix release Inheritance, as well as Maggie Q in Death of Me.

Personally, I know I’ll be reading Von Schönwerth’s fairy tales and watching Inheritance, Vampires vs. the Bronx and the Netflix adaptation of Rebecca. But the Year of Witching and the Perfume rabbit hole will be on my back burner for sure! Is there anything you’re looking forward to reading or watching as we get closer to Halloween?
